Go Horsey Go!

June 13th, 2008 Poker, WSOP No Comments »

Today we covered Day 2 of the $3k HORSE event and after a long day we’re down to the final 16. It should be an exciting (but long) day tomorrow as guys like Marcel Luske, Jennifer Harman, Todd Brunson, Steve Zolotow and Mickey Appleman are still alive in the field.

I had some success on a horse of another kind today. Garry was tossing up the idea of playing a satellite although he didn’t know which one he’d buy in to. I stupidly agreed to by 10% which meant he proceed to go and buy into the biggest one he could find. Of course I didn’t know this until we received a text message that he was heads-up in a $525 satellite. I wandered over to watch him suckout when all in with 66 vs TT when he flopped a set and turned quads. He got back to even in chips and agreed to chop the prize money. $200 profit for me. Sweeeeet!

A Day With Vanessa; Back In Black With WSOP Prop Bets

June 12th, 2008 Poker, WSOP No Comments »

After having a sickly bad session online yesterday, I had a better day today as I finally won my first prop bet of the series. One of reporters Shane gave me a chip count for a guy called “S.Jamshidi”. I said “Who the fuck is that?” Shane then goes into a song and dance about how he’s a big known player. We then bet $5 to see if another field reporter Mickey could ID him in the field. Mickey is a gun and knows more poker players than most, but when Shane offered me 2:1 odds, I had to go against our strike weapon and bet that Mickey couldn’t ID this guy. Mickey went out and came back with “I know the face but I can’t think of his name!” DING! Ship the $10! (Apologies to Sirous Jamshidi if he is reading this!)

We then went double or nothing on a bet which I had offered to my fellow blogger James about 6 hours earlier. I wanted someone to bet against Vanessa Rousso making it through the day in today’s $3k HORSE. I was confident that she had been working on her mixed games eventhough many consider her a Holdem gal. James was smart to realize that Vanessa has been coached by Chad Brown, but Shane, clearly tilted and sleep deprived, agreed to the double or nothing bet eventhough she had like 12k in chips and we only had about 3 levels left to play. Remembering that I would’ve taken this bet when she had 6k and 8 hours to play. Soon after she doubled her stack, and despite a few beats, survived the day in strong shape. DING! DING! So I’m now back in the black with WSOP prop bets!

I had prime seating on Vanessa all day today as she sat right next to the media desk and enjoyed every minute of it. Giddy Up! Here’s a present for all her fans:

Stud World Championship

June 8th, 2008 Poker, WSOP No Comments »

Today we covered Day 1 of Event #14 (yes we’re up to 14 already!) which was the $10,000 Seven-Card Stud World Championship.  As much as I’m not thrilled by Stud, it was certainly a thrill to work on an event with such a high quality field.  Every table was full of pros and I can’t wait to see how tough the final table lineup will be.  Brunson, Ivey, Negreanu, Nguyen are just some of the big names surviving the day.

Another “name” to survive the day was Shannon Elizabeth who was a surprising starter in a field where she is way out of her league.  The quote of the day goes to shout box contributor “grgcholla” who said Haha Shannon Elizabeth is playing this tourney. Do they have random mixed games in Hollywood now? If she plays the 50K horse in a slutty top it will the greatest tv ever.” Gold.

One who didn’t survive was good ol’ Phil Hellmuth.  He arrived two hours late and I accepted a prop bet that he would last through until Day 2.  He drew a very tough table and despite being a self-proclaimed Holdem God, I don’t think Stud is his game.  Still I figurd he’d value his chips and play solid and nit his way through to Day 2.  About 2 hours later he was busto, I was $10 lighter and my buddy James was giggling like a school girl.

Day 2 will play from 80 to our final eight…should be a classic!

Day 8

June 7th, 2008 Poker, WSOP No Comments »

We’re now at Day 8 of the WSOP. It kind of feels like one big rolling day really, as you really do lose track of what day of the week it is. We’ve had a couple of long days which also means you lose track of the time of day as I find myself sleeping through into the afternoon. Two days ago we worked Day 2 of Event #6, the $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo and the day’s play didn’t end until 6:30am. We walked out of the casino in glorious sunshine which was a very weird experience. Yesterday I got to work my first ever WSOP final table with Vietnamese born Trang Luu capturing the bracelet.

The highlights of the week have been Erick Lindgren winning his first bracelet, Isabelle Mercier drunk while playing to the point that she couldn’t stand straight, and that girl from ESPN360….err I mean the girls from PokerNews! 😉

Double Gulp wall update – Tom has been going strong but I’m struggling. It took me three days to finish my last one. I fear Tom may fire me from the team…

Double Gulp Wall 3

The rogue Del Taco cup has been approved by the committee as a decorative third-tier to the wall. Del Taco have the greasiest burgers you’ll find, but they have free sachets of chilli sauce ranging from mild to hot to ranging inferno!

The first few days of the WSOP are in the books (well the blogs) and all was smooth sailing. Everything seems to be running well in the Rio and the PokerNews team are working well. So well, that the first few days were nice and short which was a nice way to ease into the series. I’m expecting tougher times, but so far so good. Our tournament number system is even starting to gain popularity with the powers that be. It’s a great system and one that I’ve pushed hard with various people at different events so great to see it in action. It’s still got room to be improved but soon it will become standard at all live reported tournaments.

I’ve watched so much poker over the last few months and played so little, that it feels great when I actually get to play. I have yet to hit the live tables here, maybe I have “Tilt Phobia”, but mostly it’s because I’ve been trying to finish up on some projects before things get crazy here. I did get the chance to play a little online. I ran good for a while and remembered how much I enjoy playing. Then shit hit the fan and I soon remembered how painful it can all be. Nothing went right. I missed every draw, lost every race. My W$SD% was less than 40. I hit a few sets and lost them all to gutshots. Then the following hand was the final straw. It’s not a huge hand, and my play might be considered questionable, but I think his cards explain my decision making.  Nice call Mike.
